09 Oct Calf Housing grant includes Solar PV funding
The UK Government launched the Calf Housing for Health and Welfare grant on the 27th September. The grant provides funds to farmers who wish to improve the living conditions of newborn calves. An important pillar of the grant is to improve the environmental sustainability of calf rearing practices and energy use is included within the scope.
25% of the following costs can be covered by the grant for PV solar and battery installations:
- PV solar mounted on the roof of the calf shed including the mounting system.
- DC to AC power inverters.
- Performance monitoring systems.
- Solar batteries.
- Grid connection costs.
There is no minimum funding amount for rooftop solar systems, but the total project cost of the calf house must exceed £37,500 and the cap for funding is set at £500,000. This presents an excellent opportunity to part-finance the long-term reduction of your electricity costs, as the use of electricity is not limited to calf rearing activities.
If you need help with applying for this grant, we can introduce you to our partner, The Farm Consultancy Group (https://www.fcgagric.com/), who have a lot of experience in applying for grants of this kind. As part of that process, RenewEV would assist you with a feasibility study for solar PV system for your farm. A solar feasibility study will make sure you invest in the right size for the farm. It will also factor in the capital grant into the payback calculations to help you avoid over investing and help you maximise your return.
