What is the Green Home Grant?

What are the aims of the Green Home Grant?

The Green Home Grant was announced by the government with two broad aims. Firstly, to provide a much-needed economic boost, and secondly, to support our nations commitment to a sustainable future.

Household emissions from heating and hot water must reduce by 95% to reach the government target to be Net Zero by 2050. Therefore, the UK needs a revolution in how we heat our homes in the next few years to achieve the necessary carbon emission savings.[1]

In order to achieve these targets, we must insulate our homes, to use less energy, and when we do need to heat, we use heat sources which are far more efficient and from lower carbon sources.

How does it work?

The grant is divided into Primary, and Secondary, funding. The primary funding is aimed at insulation (to reduce the need for energy), and heat sources (so that the heat you do need is lower carbon).

The grant has a value of up to £5,000 (or £10,000 for low income families) and will cover two thirds of the cost of the work. If there is any balance left on the grant, then the remainder can be used on the Secondary category, up to the value used on the first.

For example, if you installed solar thermal at a cost of £3,000. £2,000 would be paid for by the grant, £1,000 by you; and then you would have a further £2,000 available to spend on secondary technologies such as double glazing. Here, you have used £4,000 of the available £5,000 as you cannot spend more on the secondary element than the primary.

Secondary technologies include loft insulation, double glazing, and heating control items.
